ETH2GC Sidecar is an aftermarket wired Ethernet adapter for Nintendo GameCube® consoles with Serial Port 2. It works through Swiss by emulating the original Nintendo Broadband Adapter, allowing supported retail games and homebrew software to use network features on real hardware.

The main use case is multiplayer in GameCube titles that were designed for LAN or online play:

  • Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (also online multiplayer mod)
  • Kirby Air Ride
  • 1080° Avalanche
  • Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II
  • Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II Plus
  • Phantasy Star Online Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution
  • Japan-only Homeland

ETH2GC can also be used by Swiss for network features such as SMB, FTP and FSP file access, and for development workflows such as wiiload.

As GameCube homebrew progresses, it may also become useful for downloading and updating homebrew applications directly from the console.

Features

  • 10BASE-T Ethernet using an ENC28J60 network controller
  • For Nintendo GameCube DOL-001 consoles with Serial Port 2
  • Uses Swiss Broadband Adapter emulation
  • Supports LAN multiplayer in compatible retail games
  • Supports online play in compatible games through community/private server setups where available
  • Compatible with the Game Boy Player attachment
  • Rear-facing cable routing in a compact Sidecar enclosure
  • Useful for Swiss network features and homebrew development

Important notes

  • Swiss is required; ETH2GC does not work as a standalone replacement for the original Broadband Adapter
  • It cannot be used together with SD2SP2 because both devices use Serial Port 2
  • Current Broadband Adapter emulation does not work when launching games from original physical discs
  • ENC28J60 is not fast enough for reliable ISO streaming from network storage such as RetroNAS
